Let’s face it: Many things that helped earned trust and attention a few decades ago aren’t as effective anymore. As the business landscape evolves, the ways in which we communicate with prospective customers and drive demand for our products and services should, too. However, that doesn’t mean we should toss out every single marketing tactic or idea from the past. As the old saying goes, “If it ain’t broke…”

In my last post, I discussed some of the out-dated marketing mindsets that need to be abandoned. But today, I want to revisit some of the tried-and-true tactics that are still incredibly effective.

3 Traditional Marketing Tactics that Still Work

Here are three “traditional” marketing tactics that are still as effective today as they were a few decades ago…and will probably never go out of style:

1. Give away your time and expertise.

Taking the time to provide valuable insights is still one of the single greatest ways to earn trust and attention in today’s world. Whether it’s implementing a traditional approach like hosting a free lunch-and-learn or leveraging new tools such as Facebook Live, helping prospective customers solve their problems will always be a good investment of your time.

2. Spread the word (by mouth).

Word-of-mouth is the greatest marketing tactic you have at your disposal. In a digital marketing world, where buzzwords like “storytelling” and “marketing automation” get most of the attention, it’s easy to forget the power of human connection on increasing sales. The good news is that your company has the opportunity to reach even more people by leveraging word-of-mouth marketing in today’s digital age.

3. Send a thank-you note.

Handwritten notes might be a lost art, but gratitude never goes out of style. Haven’t held a pen or pencil in your hand in a while? Maybe it’s time to start again. Send a handwritten thank you card to each of your new clients and to the person who referred them. Clients who are inundated with emails will no doubt find it refreshing.
